Cleaning-week – a very special Swabian tradition

Posted on April 26, 2012

Hello, my name is Charlotte. I was born in Schorndorf. Therefore I´m a real swabian girl. But my family isnt´t from Schorndorf. During the second world war, my mother´s family lived near Berlin. But after the war, they couldn´t stay there. So they found a new home in Schorndorf.
My favourite swabian tradition is the „Kehrwoche“, it means something like „cleaning-week. Every saturday, there is one person in the menage, who must clean the whole house. And when you forget the cleaning-week, the other swabian people are going to be angry!

Swabian language is different from Standard “High” German

Posted on April 26, 2012

Hi everybod I’m Hannah, my culturel roots are not only here in the swaibian part of Baden Württemberg, but I feel like a swaibian because I live here since I was born.
My fathers dad came from the area around Odessa in the Ukraine (his forfathers came originally from the black forest), my grandfather from my mothers side and my grandma from my fathers side are both from the “Hohenlohe” is in the north-east from Baden Württemberg and my other grandma is a real swaibian born in Stuttgart.

Typical swaibian is also the following motto:

It means “We can do everything except speak proper high German”
This motto is very popular here, I think nearly everybody in our area knows it.

Krobo like FuFu with Light Soup

Posted on April 16, 2012

This is Stephen Atter a Krobo and my parents are Krobo . The food we like best is fufu with light soup.

CULTURE Dipo is one of the famous and important festivals im Ghana It is celeberated by the Krobos. This is known as PUBERTY RITES, and is performed on adolescent girls to initiate them to womanhood. It is believed that girls who go throuugh this ritual succssefully, before they ‘’touch’’ a man, become very good wifes.

POPULAR TALE BY KROBOS: If you don’t have a wife then you must sleep on a dinny table.
Meaning : If you are not married and they are preparing a food you must be in the house so that you can have your portion but if you go to town to play and you are back don’t ask anybody for food.
